How to get the most out of counselling

How to get the most out of counselling: Whether you are experiencing a struggle, crisis or working on having a more expansive life, there are a few things that I have found that clients that have a success in their counselling experience do.

  1. Know that in order to have a different experience in your life you will need to try to approach your situation or your problem differently than you have before, even in ways that may not have occurred to you previously. Elbert Einstein once said that you cannot solve a problem at the same level that it exists. A willingness to see things and approach things differently is a very important factor in getting the most out of your counselling experience.
  2. Stay curious and avoid judgmental thinking; stay curious and try out new things for a time period before you conclude whether or not they have worked or not. One other thing: stay curious.
  3. Take time every week to reflect on yourself and how you are participating in relationship with yourself and others. Do this with intention and in your own way, whether it is by journaling or taking a walk in nature. Take time to reflect.
  4. Do the out-of-session "homework" that is recommended. Our time together is brief (you will probably spend one to one and half hours a week in counselling); most of your time will be spent outside of session, so it is important to practice what you are learning in counselling, outside of counselling. By taking your assignments seriously, you will have the most impact on the changes you want to have in your life.
  5. Take Risks: do you things you would not normally do!
  6. Try to arrive five to ten minutes before your session begins so that you have time to get settled and to focus on what you want to work on in your session time.
