Couples Counseling Vancouver / Marriage Counseling
Couples often find it easier to speak to each other and to say things they need to say in front of the therapist. Being able to let your guard down and feel safe with your partner opens the door for intimacy and connection to take place. It is here in this environment where we can redefine the problem and it is here where we can start to discover the purpose of the relationship.
It is my experience that all of our misconstructed beliefs about ourselves and others, all of our unmet needs, and all of our suppressed emotions happen while we are in relationship (whether it be a parent-child relationship, a marriage, a victimizer-victim relationship, etc). The exciting part of this is that relationship is the best place to heal these hurts. The very place that we have the most difficulty in relationship is the place with the most potential for healing and growth.
Couples counselling offers a safe environment to begin this process. Whether you have a specific problem or are simply feeling disconnected, couples counseling can help.
Family Counselling
This is for families whose relationships and/or communication with each other have become strained, distant, or conflicted. As Virginia Satir says, relationships are the living links that join family members. Through exploring the many aspects of these relationships, you can come to an understanding of the family in which you now live and can create new vitality and experience the joy of being connected.
Individual Counselling
People seek individual counselling for a number of reasons, whether it be for personal growth, anxiety, depression, unresolved issues from the past, or needing support in a current relationship. Through the therapeutic process, an individual can come to a better sense of self, form richer relationships, get a feeling of greater belonging in the world, and live with more purpose.
Post Partum Counselling
"For 10-28% of mothers, the birth or adoption of a baby marks a change in their lives which is quite distressing. They may feel a range of emotions, from numbness and sadness to irritability, confusion, and anxiety." From Postpartum Depression and Anxiety: A self-help guide for mothers, published by Pacific Post Partum Support Society.
I have been working with women who have post partum depression and anxiety (and their families) since 1993. The experience of post partum depression is as varying and unique to each woman as are its contributing factors. Symptoms range from sadness, numbness, irritability and anger, not bonding to one's baby, scary thoughts and fantasises, worrying all the time about an infant, insomnia, panic attacks, and the list goes on. Contributing factors can include losses, unresolved issues from the past, hormones, difficult birth experience, support system (or lack thereof), disappointments related to motherhood myths, and a host of others. As this is a unique and varied experience for each woman and her family, so is the healing process.
