The idea of “motherhood” has become synonymous with the mother-child bond. But what if you don’t have a mother to celebrate with today. Or you don’t have any children — by choice or circumstance.  What then do you celebrate today?

Well, you can still celebrate motherhood — but instead you widen the context of what that means.  All women give “birth” during their lives. We birth businesses, home cooked meals, well-nurtured friendships, and creative projects. We give our hearts to raising pets, tending gardens, committing to love and discovering ourselves more deeply (especially in therapy!). On one level or another, we all know what it is like to risk bringing something into the world that is hard work and pure joy, all rolled into one.

So today, every woman can celebrate the mother in her!

Happy Mother’s Day everyone.
